What if you want to be more balanced instead of just loads of damage and tankiness? Take Divine Soul instead - now you can take Cleric spells. Or use your Sorcery Points as fuel to get more spell slots, and thus more Smites. Or any other blasting or utility spell you need in the moment. If you are AL-legal and can't use SCAG cantrips, then no problem! Quicken a Fireball instead. You can also Twinned Spell a Booming Blade against 2 targets, meaning that you still attack twice as an action but deal an extra 3d8 thunder to each target (with the threat of 4d8 more if they move). Scaled up to using a level 5 spell slot, that means your bonus action attack, with GFB, can deal up to 4d8 + 7 psychic (with Dueling), and 3d8 + 5 fire (with 20 CHA), with an extra 3d8 + 5 fire to an adjacent target. Which means you get a 3rd, supercharged attack with your upcasted Shadow Blade. The thing that sets this apart is that Sorcerers can Quicken spells, including Booming Blade and Green-Flame Blade. all the good tanking spells on top of Paladin's absurd defenses. You can also take Shield, Absorb Elements, Mirror Image etc. You get up to level 7 spells, and you'll have a level 8 and 9 spell slot to play with for upscaling or as fuel for more Smites. Then you go Draconic Bloodline for some extra HP, Mage Armor for free if you have the stats to be DEX-based (remember you need 13 STR to multiclass), extra damage on a certain element when casting spells (we're going with Fire), and eventually flight as a capstone. Given that Shadow Blade is a melee weapon attack, you are more than capable of stacking ridiculous amounts of damage on top of its already high damage when upcasted. Never worry about a saving throw again.Ĭrucially, however, you get Divine Smite. You also get Aura of Protection, which is broken. I know Bladesinger is excellent, but considering you can get it on Sorcerer as well, I saw a much bigger draw in using it on a Sorcadin.Ħ Conquest / 14 Draconic Bloodline SorcererĬonquest mainly because of the amazing free spells (Armor of Agathys for loads of extra HP if needed, Hold Person so you don't need it from the Sorcerer spell list, Spiritual Weapon to fill bonus action attacks if needed), and the Channel Divinity is good for locking down large groups from approaching squishies. I'm playing a character that will be using Shadow Blade as their main staple in future. It's literally just a weapon with psychic damage as a base. Note: Shadow Blade can in fact add your Dex or Str, Crawford has confirmed this. So a Bard has to multiclass at least to level 3 to get it. This has the minor drawback of getting Int and Dex high though.Įdit: I forgot another weird thing with the spell it may use a weapon attack BUT you don't add your Dex or Str to damage, it only does the psychic damage.Īlso I should mention it is only available on the Sorcerer, Wizard and Warlock lists. I was also thinking a Wizard Bladesinger may work as well again dual wielding. You’d only get the spell by level 7, and wouldn’t get any high level spell slots that your sneak attack would more than make up for that. The best I can come up with is a dual wielding Rogue Arcane Trickster. Most importantly, since using it means making a weapon attack it can’t benefit from anything that increases your spell attack like the Wand of the War Wizard. Since it only lasts for a minute a Warlock can’t make it his hexblade and it can never get bonuses. This means that when you attack, it isn’t a spell attack and therefore doesn’t use your spellcasting ability modifier. The one thing that has made it difficult for me to create a build around this is that it creates an actual weapon. The best part, though, is that if you attack in dim light or darkness you have advantage on each hit. It creates a blade of shadow that has the light, finesse and thrown properties and striking with it causes psychic damage, which scales depending on the spell slot used. It is a 2nd level concentration spell that can be cast as a minor action and lasts a minute. For the uninitiated Shadowblade is an illusion spell found in Xanthar’s Guide to Everything.
